In the frame of this project, an art workshop is taking place in the mansions of Poulko and Argyriadis (Maliogass) in Siatista, Kozani, owned by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, a live art workshop with online applications for organized visits of students, mainly primary and secondary school students, is being implemented.
The aim is through painting, paper-cutting and artistic creation in general to familiarise pupils with the artistic forms of the post-Byzantine period and through artistic play to form, in an indirect way, an awareness of the wider and local historical events and artistic creation during the post-Byzantine period.
Alongside the in-person tour of the mansions, the visit is combined with an online engagement of the students – through the website of the project – which includes a virtual tour, multimedia content and a digital repository, where students can upload their own artistic creations based on the decoration of the mansions.
Pedagogical and educational targets
The educational program aims to familiarize students with the artistic heritage of the post-Byzantine period through two of the most important secular monuments of Siatista, in order to develop the necessary skills to be able to recognize artistic creations in different media (fresco, stone sculpture, wood carving, furniture decoration, engravings, etc.) but also creations of different historical origins (Byzantine art, Ottoman decorative art, art of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, art of the Modern Greek State, etc.)
At the same time, the program aims to raise students’ awareness on issues of cultural heritage protection through the acquaintance with characteristic, now restored, mansions of Siatista, which are among the most important monuments of this kind in Greece.
More specifically, the programme aims to help students:
Learn about the particular architecture of the mansions of Siatista, the details surrounding the construction of the specific houses and the spaces they consisted of.
Understand the historical, social and political context in which the mansions were created, while exploring the history and the experiences of the people who inhabited them.
Learn how to observe the interior and exterior decoration of the mansions (frescoes, woodcarvings, stained-glass windows, etc.) and to learn about the patterns, colors, and artistic styles of the post-Byzantine period, while understanding their importance for the general history of art.
Develop their expression, imagination, and artistic skills.
Work in groups and collaboratively while valuing individual expression.
Pedagogical methods
The main axes of the educational programme are storytelling, dramatization, playful approach and visual creative process. These pedagogical methods have been chosen to enhance the overall learning experience within the mansions, while offering autonomy to the students and further meaningfulness to their visit.
Both the narration and the dramatization help the students to become more familiar with the space and to learn historical details in a more creative context, directly experiencing the period’s setting and using their imagination to sketch the lives of the people associated with the mansions. In doing so, students’ emotional involvement, teamwork and active participation are strengthened, as well as their ability to focus their attention on intangible aspects of cultural heritage (such as the feelings of the characters, their emotions, their reactions, their habits and their perceptions on certain issues) thus further sharpening their imagination and their memory.
The playing of games is an equally important tool in the educational process, as it aims to transform the sterile transmission of information into a fun and interactive learning experience. In addition to teamwork and active participation, it requires a high level of concentration and good cooperation between students, subconsciously encouraging them to learn effortlessly.
The culmination of all this and the key element of the programme is the art workshop, which gives space for expression and creativity to all students participating in the educational program. Based on the conviction that art significantly benefits children by promoting creativity, mental and physical health, fine kinetic skills, understanding of emotions and the world around them in general, the art workshop enhances students’ observational skills, promotes visual communication through images, encourages students to be themselves by giving their own perspective on the subjects they are asked to capture on paper, as well as to develop or discover their artistic skills.

The educational program “The Colours of Siatista” has been designed to correspond to the curriculum of many primary and secondary school subjects (History, Environmental Study, Language, Home Economics, Art, etc.). Both the guided tour of the mansions and the art workshop of the program can be directly or indirectly linked to the school curriculum. Our scientific team went through the school textbooks and identified certain chapters within them that are most closely linked to the information that the students will gain through their participation in our educational program.
